2300AD

Watermarked PDF
$49.99

Three hundred years from now, humanity is claiming worlds far from Earth. Despite nearly destroying itself in the Twilight War, despite all the wars since, humanity has held on and kept its dream alive. 2300AD is the story of that dream, as humanity reaches for the stars.

This is a richly-developed hard science fiction universe, with ships spinning against the night as they are propelled by the stutterwarp drive, a true violation of physics as we know now it. Airships, helicopters and hovercraft are common sights on worlds of the frontier, while spaceplanes and rockets carry explorers and traders to orbit, and from there starships take them across the gulf of space to the colonies.

Campaigns in 2300AD range from interstellar exploration and war on the far frontier, building new colonies on hostile worlds, discovering and understanding alien species, and engaging in espionage and crime in the gritty mega-cities of the Core worlds.

The 2300AD box set contains:

Book 1 Characters & Equipment: Everything you need to create explorers, company agents, military personnel, merchants and other inhabitants of 2300AD. This book also contains a comprehensive equipment guide, personal augmentations, and a selection of robots and drones commonly used in space and on colony worlds.

Book 2 The Worlds of 2300AD: An exploration of the universe of 2300AD, from the Core worlds to the furthest colonies. You will learn about the aliens and animals that inhabit them, how humanity has adapted to living on their surfaces, and the most hostile of environmental threats to be found beyond the Earth.

Book 3 Vehicles & Spacecraft: A full guide to operating and fighting in spacecraft and vehicles, from humble dirt bikes to powerful spacegoing frigates. There is also a glimpse at the alien spacecraft that have been encountered thus far by humanity.

Starchart of Known Space: A massive poster map depicting every star system known to humanity and the routes starships take to each.

As has happened on Mongoose’s site, the files have been updated, notably with an appendix that includes information on Core Worlds’ characters.

I normally would grab up a 2300AD product as I'm a long-time fan of the setting; but 50$ is significantly overpriced for the PDF and I will not be buying this line.

This is a general comment to Mongoose Publishing. Your prices are ridiculous, period. These are Pdfs for crying out loud. I love the games you have gotten the licenses for. I love Traveller. I love 2300AD. I would never pay they amount of money you are charging for these products. I have gotten the originals on ebay for less money. For those of you that haven't noticed. You need the Traveller core rule book! So to use this product you really need to spend 80 USD. (Or 60 USD for the bundle).

$50 for a pdf is ridiculous, more so for a rehashed game!

The world has gone mad with it's pricing of things, digital items no less!

Especially since there is already so much available and honestly, what is truly wrong with older versions that makes new versions so much better that the assumption is they are worth this price???

As someone who has books from the first 3 to current, both systems, when will the HC come out, & will there be a bundle?

Cool, last part of this questioning, I hope, are those 3 separate books, or are they all in the core book? You didn't include the ToC in the Full-Size Preview so I can't tell. If they are 3 separate books, (Aerospace Engineer's Handbook), I'll order ASAP. If not, it doesn't make sense to pay this price ($49.99) for the HC & the PDF. I also like the star chart you are including. The maps in the Great Rift are really nice, but they don't justify the high cost.

Based on the Toc you have there (page count), the 3 books are included in this PDF but will be separate SB books on release. Is that correct?

Hmmm, so nothing like the link below? I appreciate all the time you have spent clarifying my questions. However, paying full price for the PDF & the 3 Books, just to get a nice box & a map feels steep. $69.99, you would have a sale, perhaps even at $79.99. If it came with the Aerospace book, even if shipping later, you would have a sale at the $99.99 price. Instead, I'll wait for a sale here and elsewhere. I understand Printing costs have gone up, but the price to make a PDF & the profit off the sales hasn't changed much other than any increase in salaries to employees. When you amortize that, it is negligible.

I've got 74 Travller related products in print. I'm counting the Drinax boxed set, the Great Rift, Original T1 boxed, T5, & others as 1. Many are from other publishers, sure, & IDK the number I have in PDF. I just wanted to give the picture that I've loved & have continued to collect Traveller since my 1st set in 1979. I want this, I want the boxed set, I just...See more

Not sure what the links are about, and I’ll leave the question of costs up to Matthew if he is still answering.

Just pointing out that there are some developments coming soon for this set - adding core world characters, and editing and file adjustments - which is appreciated if it happens. I don’t have a massive issue with paying for it as it is, or if it gets discounted at some later date.

Also, that one review cited here so far is a 5 star review, not 1 star (and it wasn’t me - I bought mine at the Mongoose site).

Great content and a good update to the MtGv1 2300. However.. and this is a big however.. I am a little disapointed that ship building is being ported to another copy instead of simply providing for content that could be overlaid with the existing version of High Guard. Other than that, its a great product.

Hi there,

There is a very big reason for that - when you see the forthcoming Aerospace Engineer's Handbook you will see that there was not reasonable way we could have got those rules into the core set!

I had a look at the Full-size preview and it appears a little different (& intriguing) to the previous versions of 2300AD.

From looking at the replies to comments here, am I correct in thinking that this version of 2300AD is made/produced by Australians (particularly, Queenslanders)?

I seek the confirmation, so I can provide some 'Billy Moore-esque' encouragement...

(Queenslanders will understand)

Somehow, in the bundle, I don't gain any advantage as a previous purchaser of the core book. I paid $20 for it, but don't get the full amount discounted, only $10. So I pay $50 for the bundle, which is the same as buying 2300AD alone, so no benefit.

Wonderful book and a fine update from the MGT1 version; basically all I hoped for. But, I have to say I am a bit disappointed on the PDF compression used here. I already worried when I saw a file size of 23MB for a 330+ page product and indeed the artifacts and haloing on the bitmap images are awful to behold... :( Mongoose has been trying to optimise their PDFs lately, given that the old ones didn't load smoothly on mobile hardware, but imo this level of compression is far too much. The beautiful art within is absolutely ruined this way. The weird thing is that all other MGT2 products that they have been updating this way did lower the resolution of the images somewhat but without the awful bitmap compression artifacts that plague this release, so no idea wat went wrong here...

PDF optimisation should above all focus on layering structure and object referencing instead of file size and images, as the former two are more often than not the actual culprits for laggy documents and not the latter. So...See more

Customer avatar
Edward L August 24, 2021 6:49 pm UTC
It’s a decent deal if you need both books, but the way Mongoose structured the bundle is actually disadvantageous to those who already own Traveller Core. The 25% discount they’re quoting is the result of an approximately 67% discount on Traveller Core, but the bundle actually increases the cost of 2300AD by a penny. I usually don’t bother to comment on sites, but I find their approach to the bundle very misleading given how the bundles I purchase usually work. If the 25% discount were applied equally to both books in the bundle I’d agree that they are making an attempt to address the pricing concerns, but as things stand the bundle appears to be more of a trick.

Matt, in the hopes that you see this soon. The stat block for the Neo-cat is messed up. Much of it is copied from the Flying blind.

While myself and my partner had some amusement from the visuals (a slow flying neo-cat which drops on you with slat blades, behaviour type "killer") I'd like to see what the actual stat line was supposed to be.

George K August 24, 2021 7:34 pm UTC
Bingo in one Edward, it's a great deal...if you DON'T own the Corebook already, which is required. If you do own it, you get 0% savings on the product. It's a step in the right direction, but not for long time players. At least they tried?

Weird. I'll add it to my list. In the meantime, these are the neo-cat stats from an older version of the manuscript:

Animal Hits Speed
Neo-cat 6 12 m

Skills Athletics (DEX) 3, Survival 1, Recon 2, Melee (Claws) 1
Attacks Claws (D3)
Traits Small (-2), Heightened Senses, Uplifted (INT 3), Fast Metabolism (1), Nightvision
Behaviour Carnivore/Pouncer

I agree with everyone else here, the discount split on the bundle is messed up. I didn't have either book, so the bundle was a good deal for me and I just got it. Mongoose, you guys should redo the bundle, maybe split the discount to $10 for each book instead of $20 on one and -$0.01 on the other. Just a thought.

The previous edition (from Mongoose) had very little informations on Kafers (no weapons, no vehicles, no ships, just the attributes of an average Kafer).
Does the new book gives more about the Kafers?
What is new compared to the previous edition?
Customer avatar
Rory H August 24, 2021 10:23 am UTC
It is certainly not something that is to the level of a full sourcebook, but there is some detail on Kaefers, including generic stats for a trooper, a couple of weapons stats and a spacecraft (the Kaefer ‘Geist’) in the third book.

The main difference is simply the uplift in layout and art (which you can see a bit in the preview). I think the catalogue of hardware and DNA mods is possibly expanded on, but each item is given more space in the same manner as the Central Supply Catalogue or the Vehicles book, so they take up a lot more space anyway. Rules are arguably tighter, better organized and better integrated with other Traveller supplements potentially allowing to crossover more material from them.

There is notably less information on Core Worlds, as the focus is settled on playing in the Frontier Worlds or the Space in between (the Core Worlds will get their own book). This has been a point of criticism for people who want to play Core Worlders.

It looks like none of the books in this set feature a comprehensive chronology from Twilight to 2300. I found a lot of snippets of chronology here and there through the text, but it was still kind of random.

Another thing I found I would have liked was at least a brief summary of the state of the various national powers in 2300. For example, I read a bit of text that appeared to imply that America's national capital is located in Colorado in 2300 (which would make sense, as it's likely Washington is still just a radioactive crater). I was also looking for more information about the background of the French coup d'etat that leads to the new French Empire.

Sure, I could likely find all this stuff in earlier editions — I own all of the original GDW stuff, for example — but my point is that I shouldn't have to. These sorts of things may not matter to other players, but they do matter to me, and influence whether I will continue to use and support this edition of the background. Things...See more

Hey there,

Please be aware that Twilight is not the same universe as 2300AD - we did look at linking them but it was decided not to do so, and keep them separate.

We will indeed be looking at the nations of Earth closely in the future.

Hope that helps!

I understand that you have divorced the 2300AD setting from that of Twilight: 2000, but basically you still have the same thing happening and all through the text, you refer to this period as "Twilight," so there's that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
